I know I was supposed to be on vacation. I know I

I know I was supposed to be on vacation. I know I was supposed to be relaxed. However, my eyes kept on looking for another hijabi on my trip to Wisconsin. My ears were alert for any go back to where you came from comments. My body ached from constantly surveying any negativity that could be thrown towards my family. Trying to keep an invisible shield up around my kids was tiring. My heart and brain ached. Although nothing passed through my shield on this trip, the girls had fun and I had fun. It would have been nice to see another hijabi and not feel so out of place, but that's the thing. I am where I'm supposed to be, the midwest is my home.

My mom's couch and I would like to wish you Eid Mubarak! I took a personal day today and I consider myself lucky.

Some of my Muslim colleagues did not take the day off today because of state testing. Many of my Muslim students were too scared to take off because they felt they would be behind in classes and some teachers are not lenient. One student told me, "The makeup test is usually harder, I can't take the risk." If you know a teacher like this who cannot fathom that their student should feel comfortable enough to enjoy their own religious holiday with their families and friends, they need to reassess if they're in education for the betterment of their students.

Please advocate for your Muslim colleagues and your students. Talk to your unions and your school boards about adding Eid and other religious holidays to the school calendar.

Lastly, remember that Christmas holidays are usually 2 weeks. You get time to prepare, enjoy and recover from the holidays before you go back to work. That's awesome! However, your Muslim colleagues and students are coming back to work and school tomorrow and will be tired and won't have time to recover or rest.

If they're sleepy, understand. If they have holiday blues, listen to them. If they're shy, ask them about Eid ul Fitr and they'll brighten immediately. Illinois is voting on a law soon that every student will receive five excused religious holiday days, progress can happen! Keep on going at it my lovelies!

I'm breathing, living, and praying for another year of learning, gratitude, and patience! I discovered donuts this year, audiobooks, @jannahcircle and how to be an anti-racist. Thank you for always being so lovely and supportive! And guess what!? I know what year I'm turning and it's going to be an awesome 35!

I love that you messaged all of your Muslim IG friends and wished them Ramadan Mubarak! I love how you read that Ramadan focused book in your class! I love how you had that personal conversation with your Muslim student about Ramadan!

Let's keep that momentum going in your real life too! How will you incorporate some Ramadan traditions in your own life? Will you eat more dates? Will you make some Iftar recipes from around the world? Will you remember to give charity? Will you remember to be humble and honest? Will you advocate for your Muslim students when it comes to breaking down barriers? Will you decorate your classroom or put up a sign that says Ramadan Mubarak to all!

It's not a one and done deal. Incorporating diverse voices in your classroom and your own homes is an all year thing, not just during Ramadan.

It's not too late to put up a Ramadan banner in your classroom either! Order from @ramadanandjuliette Her banners are so lovely, unique and easy to put together!

Tell your daughters they can be anything they want. They work hard. They go to school. They get valuable work experience. They get their first job. They get married and then have their first kid. Then they find out that childcare is nearly impossible to find or too expensive. Half of their paycheck goes to childcare. They quit to take care of their children, not because they want to, because they're forced to. I want my daughters to have a choice in the future. Stay at home or go to work. That choice should not be made because only some people have good access to childcare and some people don't.

It's going to be hard to stand up for what's right

It's going to be hard to stand up for what's right and just. Say no to dowry. Vehemently shout against honor killings. Say no to preventing girls from gaining access to school. Say no to period shame.
Say yes to equal work, equal pay. Say yes to six months maternity and paternity leave. Say yes to childcare stipends. Choose to challenge because the work isn't finished yet.

I'd like to add that I would like to teach like LaNesha, speak like Naomi, dress like Hakeemah, recite like Hassan, be strong like Angel, advocate like Ryse and so much more. Oh yeah, and jump like Michael too but I think my 5'3" frame fails me!
